AOS is on Facebook!

If you're an avid user of Facebook or a newbie, just getting started, be sure to join the American Orchid Society's Facebook Membership Page. It was set up to create a forum for discussion, questions and news all about the national headquarters and affiliate organizations of AOS. People from New Hampshire to Florida are already members, sharing their orchid-related news.

Just log-on to your Facebook account (or create one at www.facebook.com; it's free and easy!), then in the Search box, type in "American Orchid Society.." Click on the icon with two, blue people on it, indicating a Membership page. Once you're in, become a Member and join the conversation.

If you have any questions about how to join Facebook or the AOS Membership page, please contact the Page Administrators Carol Holdren of AOS.

Innovation in Orchid Societies

Are you an “Innovative Society”?  If you have some new methods or ideas which are helping to make your orchid society successful, please share them with us.  The American Orchid Society Affiliated Society Committee is gathering these ideas to be distributed at the Affiliated Society Committee Breakfast on April 30 ---during the Oklahoma Orchid Society Spring AOS Members Meeting.  This Members Meeting is a wonderful 3 day orchid show which is open to everyone.  You are all invited to attend and hear about these innovative societies or you can receive the information from our ASC blog, Facebook page--- or by email or telephone.

Orchid societies are facing a multitude of challenges including the economy, changing demographics and changing communication methods.  Our greatest asset is our volunteers who have come up with solutions to these and other challenges and are willing to share their ideasSo send us your best ideas and come to the breakfast.

Examples of what we have in the works are:

  • Manny Aybar from Dallas is reworking the Deep Cut Orchid Society from New Jersey “Orchid Show in a Box” program which DCOS has so generously shared for years.  This program has all of the forms that are helpful when planning and hosting an orchid show.

  • Richard Brandon from Florida has put “Phalaenopsis Basics” in digital form so any society can use it. This is a great and easy to use educational program.   Both of these will be available after the meeting.

Share your successes with other orchid societies!

Come to the breakfast in OKC or we’ll send you the information afterward.  For details on the meeting go to www.aos.org and look under “Events” and then “Members Meetings” or contact me, Carol Holdren, at affiliated_societies@aos.org or 561-212-4876.

Time to plan for an Orchid Conference!

Ready for a fun get away?  April 28 thru May 2 is the Spring 2010 AOS Members Meeting which is being hosted by the Oklahoma Orchid Society in OKC.  This is an Orchid Conference which includes the Orchid Digest, the Southwest Regional Orchid Growers Association, International Phalaenopsis Alliance, Pleurothallid Alliance and the Slipper Orchid Alliance as well as the AOS – they are all meeting at a fabulous orchid show.  The conference starts off with a preview party on Thursday evening, then on Friday the keynote speaker  is Joyce Stewart after which sales and the show open to the public.   Several orchid lectures are scheduled.  Saturday evening is a fun auction followed by dinner and a Hoedown party.  You can see all of details as well as download a  registration form at www.aos.org under ‘Events’ and then ‘Members Meetings’.

As an affiliated society member you are invited to attend this conference including the AOS Affiliated Society Breakfast on Friday, April 30th where we will be sharing the results of our Innovative Society Survey.  Please join us for orchids, socializing, lectures and all kinds of orchid fun.  Registration is $89 before 4/1/2010 after which the price goes up to $109.  Every registrant gets a fabulous goodie bag!   Hotel rooms start at $89.  Is this meeting too far west for you?  The Fall 2010 AOS meeting is in Virginia Beach, VA on October 27 - 31.  Attend either or both and you’re sure to have a great time.  I hope to see you in OKC!
